About Mauritius Airport:

The Mauritius International Airport also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (previously known as SSR Airport) is the only international airport in Mauritius.

The airport is located at Plaine Magnien, at the south east of Mauritius. The distance from the capital, Port Louis is about 50km and 45 minutes drive by car.

The Mauritius Airport is named after the first Prime Minister of Mauritius – Mr. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900–1985).

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is owned and operated by the government of Mauritius. The airport serves as the hub of the Mauritius' national airline – Air Mauritius.

In 1999 the airport was expanded and redeveloped. The development work of the airport was completed in the end of the year 2000.

Today 20 scheduled airlines serve more than 35 destinations through the SSR International Airport. In 2008 more than 2.6 million passengers transited through the airport, and over 19,200 aircraft movements were recorded.

The existing airport terminal building is a two-story structure, with arrivals handled mainly on the lower floor and departures handled on the upper floor. The airport has a large external open sky parking lot.

In line with the government’s aspirations to welcome 2 million tourists by 2015, the construction of a new Passenger Terminal to the tune of 11 billion Rs (about 250mil Euro) is planned to be opened during 2012. This new infrastructure will have a handling capacity of 4 million passengers and delivering improved user’s experience.
