Mauritius Today

Mauritius has known quite a lot of development since it has gained its independence. Also since then Mauritius has become known for its good political and social stability.

Mauritius is a republic within the Commonwealth with a population of more than 1.2 million. It is a qualified cosmopolitan society where interreligious groups of people are living peacefully together and contributing to this peaceful paradise. This is why Mauritians can never complain that they are not rich, in fact they are very rich having inherited so many norms, values, culture and tradition, and should really be proud and thankful to their ancestors. The Mauritians are still bonded with their traditional norms and culture but at the same time are open minded for changes.

Since its independence Mauritius has depended mainly on the sugar exportation for its economic development. The sources of revenue also came from its agricultural products like tea, corn, potatoes, bananas and fishes. From a mono-crop economy that is depending solely on sugar exportation, Mauritius has diversified into different economic activities such as textile, tourism, financial services, outsourcing, apparel industry, and has developed largely in the B.P.O call centers.

The recent activities and economical progress in the country has been carving out special niches in textile, tourism, and financial services. Mauritius also is developing and upgrading the information and communication technology sector and is quickly turning into a cyber island.

During recent years Mauritius has embarked on a comprehensive reform programmed to move to its next phase of development capitalizing on human resources, Information Technology and higher value-adding activities. Today Mauritius is well equipped with a large number of highly skilled labor forces and very good technology infrastructure and a supporting physical and social infrastructure.
